Paragliding in Lauterbrunnen

As someone who isn’t great with heights, I never imagined myself paragliding. But soon after booking our trip to Switzerland, Drew suggested we do it and I was on board! We decided to use Airtime Paragliding since they came highly recommended by a friend of ours.

For our time in the Berner Oberland region, we stayed in Wengen, which made the Lauterbrunnen paragliding option the ideal spot for us. We caught a train from Wengen down into the Lauterbrunnen valley and met up with our paragliding pilots at the Airtime Cafe on the main strip. From there, they drove us to a cable car station where we took a cable car to Mürren. In Mürren, we hiked about 10 minutes uphill to get to our prep and takeoff area. As our pilots laid out the parachutes and rigged everything up, we hopped into our harnesses and helmets.

Before we knew it, it was time to make a running start and take flight. It all happens so fast! One minute you’re running down a hill, and moments later you are lifted into the air, sailing over the Lauterbrunnen valley.

The views are spectacular! Your flight will last anywhere from 20-30 minutes and you’ll be able to see mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and beautiful greenery (unless it’s winter, then I suppose snow.) I was a little nervous when we first took flight, but felt comfortable after only a minute or two in the air. Flying over the valley and taking in the scenery was breathtaking. Your pilot will be seeking thermals to help keep you in flight, so you’ll feel a bit of a whoosh and jolt when you hit a thermal as it propels you higher.

If you have a sense of adventure and are looking for a unique and thrilling way to see the Berner Oberland region, I would highly recommend paragliding. Drew and I loved our flights and it was definitely a highlight from our trip.
